What Is Lorem Ipsum? The Real Story Behind the Placeholder Text Designers Use Every Day

If you have ever worked with a designer or looked at a website template, you have almost certainly seen blocks of text starting with 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.' It looks like Latin. It sort of is Latin. But the story behind it is more interesting than most people realize.

Where Lorem Ipsum Comes From

The text is derived from 'De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum' (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a philosophical work written by Roman statesman Cicero in 45 BC. Specifically, it comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of the text.

But here is the thing: the lorem ipsum version is not a clean excerpt. Someone, at some point in history, took Cicero's original Latin and scrambled it. They dropped words, added others, and rearranged passages until the text lost its original meaning. The result is something that looks and feels like real language but does not actually say anything coherent.

Why Designers Still Use It

The whole point of placeholder text is to fill space without distracting from the design. Regular English text pulls the viewer's attention to the words themselves. Someone looking at a page layout will start reading the content instead of evaluating the typography, spacing, and visual hierarchy.

Lorem ipsum solves this because it has a natural distribution of letters and word lengths that mimics real language, but the words themselves are meaningless. Your brain does not try to read it the same way it would read English, so the design elements stay in focus.

How Long Has It Been Used?

The earliest known use of lorem ipsum as typesetting filler dates back to the 1500s, when an unknown printer scrambled a passage of Cicero to create a type specimen book. That means designers have been using this exact text for over 500 years.

It survived the transition from hand-set type to Linotype machines, from phototypesetting to desktop publishing, and from print to web design. Today it is used in Figma mockups, WordPress themes, and mobile app prototypes. Few things in design have proven this durable.

When You Should Not Use Lorem Ipsum

There are valid arguments against using lorem ipsum. The main one is that it can mask content problems. If you design a layout with placeholder text and the real content turns out to be twice as long (or half as long), the design breaks.

For content-heavy projects like blogs, news sites, and documentation, designing with real content (or realistic approximations) is often better. But for UI components, app screens, and early-stage wireframes where the content is not finalized yet, lorem ipsum remains the standard.
